Poetical Works

Help dating a book by Sir Walter Scott?
I have in my possession a very old book titled “The Poetical Works” by Sir Walter Scott. Inside it is also labeled as “Dramatic Pieces.Miscellaneous.” “Complete In Four Volumes.” Mine is labeled as VOL. IV. The publisher is listed as New York: Peter Fenelon Collier. Although finding it’s worth would be interesting, I am mostly curious about when it might have been printed/published. Even a “ball-park” dating would be most appreciated.
Probably late 1880s. See the following record from Worldcat.org, the public interface of OCLC, a combined, or “union” catalog of library holdings at thousands of institutions.

A number of booksellers guess 1830s for this book on abebooks.com, one of the most popular used and antiquarian bookselling sites, but they must be wrong. Peter Fenelon Collier was born in 1849, and didn’t start publishing until around the 1870s.

Books from the late nineteenth century often look older than they are, since the paper used then was often highly acidic, which eventually makes the leaves brown and brittle. Books from the 1830s are actually much more likely to be bright and supple, since they are likely printed on cotton or linen rag paper.
As for worth, there is one on abebooks.com for $10. Given that it is a late reprint of a very common author, is part of a broken set, and is likely very brittle, that’s probably a fair price. Most booksellers would not take it. Those who would might offer a dollar or two. Sorry.
